How to photograph and prepare your Images for your Amazon Listing

Along with the product on white, it’s great to shoot the product in an environment or on a different tabletop that matches the aesthetic and vibe of the product itself.


To prepare high-quality photography for your Amazon product page, there are several key considerations:

  1. Image Guidelines: Familiarize yourself with Amazon's image guidelines. These guidelines provide specific requirements for image size, file format, background, and other aspects of product photography. Adhering to these guidelines ensures your images meet Amazon's standards.

  2. Lighting: Use proper lighting techniques to showcase your product accurately. Soft, diffused lighting helps to minimize harsh shadows and highlight important details. Consider using natural light or investing in studio lighting equipment to achieve the desired effect.

  3. Background: Use a clean and clutter-free background to keep the focus on your product. White backgrounds are commonly used on Amazon, but other neutral colors or lifestyle backgrounds can also be effective depending on your product category.

  4. Product Composition: Carefully compose your product within the frame to showcase its features and capture the attention of potential customers. Consider using different angles, close-ups, and product groupings to demonstrate functionality, scale, and variations.

  5. Product Presentation: Ensure your product is clean, free from defects, and properly staged. Pay attention to details such as arranging product accessories, folding clothes neatly, or appealingly displaying packaging.

Amazon image guidelines as of September 2021

Image Types: Amazon allows several image types, including the main image, additional images, lifestyle images, and infographics. Each image type has specific requirements.

Having a clean product on white eliminates distractions and allows prospective customers to see the product without distractions.

  1. Image Size: The main product image must be at least 1000 pixels on the longest side. For additional images, Amazon recommends a minimum of 500 pixels on the longest side.

  2. File Format: Amazon accepts JPEG (.jpg) or TIFF (.tif/.tiff) file formats.

  3. Background: The main product image must have a pure white background (RGB values of 255, 255, 255). Other image types, such as lifestyle images, may have non-white backgrounds.

  4. Image Quality: Images should be high-resolution and clear, with no blurriness or pixelation. Amazon recommends using a minimum of 72 dpi (dots per inch).

  5. Text and Graphics: Images should not include any text, logos, watermarks, or promotional overlays. However, infographics are allowed and can include text or graphics that provide helpful information about the product.

  6. Image Content: Images should accurately represent the product being sold. They should not include any irrelevant objects, additional accessories, or misleading elements. The main product image should show the product on its own without any packaging or props.
